Hurry and visit the Old Oakland Holiday Ice Rink before it disappears until Christmas 2019! It’s such a special part of Oakland that only exists for about 20 days out of the year. The last day to visit the rink this season is Sunday, January 6th . The Old Oakland Ice Rink is an ice rink made of real ice with skate rentals, loud pop music, a bar, barista, and nightly events on ice located on the corner of 8th St. and Washington St in Old Oakland. Did I mention it’s kid friendly!? Available for a 90-minute rental, you can get a “tommy,” which is a skate aid for kids (or adults, in my case) and also something that small children can be pushed on by adults. My daughter, Kadence, 3 ½, had a blast on the seal both times we visited this season.
Kadence was determined that she going to learn how to ice skate this year and kept requesting that I take her. We are finally to our destination, and after about 3 minutes on the ice, she gave up and retreated to the big orange seal, pushed by me. We skated to booming Rhianna music surrounded by Victorian office buildings built in the 1880’s, open to the warm sun shine. You only need a lite sweater. After 45 minutes on the ice, we headed to Cookie Bar Creamery the next block over and got a single scoop of Purple Yam ice cream(I highly recommend!). To end our morning, we headed over to Urban Eclectics to check out the vintage collectables.
Other walkable notable places in the area is the Urban Village farmers market, which happens every Friday morning, Tamarindo, Antojeria Mexicana food, and Fort Green Sports Bar. Street parking was usually available, although there are several parking garages in the area.
